Riox is a Dutch platform for recording and managing sewer service connections. Groundworkers use the mobile app to record materials, photos and the layout of connections directly in the field, and the data flows through to a web portal where local authorities and contractors manage, validate and export the as-built data. The app is published by Riox B.V. in Tilburg. The platform was developed in 2019 by Adaptivity, together with Rio Brabant and the local authority of Oosterhout, and won the innovation prize of RIONED, the Dutch knowledge centre for sewer management, that year.

The weak spot in recording service connections has always been the location itself. A connection drawn in “roughly here” has to be searched for again at the next dig. That is where the link with marXact comes in: surveying sewer service connections to the centimetre while the trench is still open.

How the integration works

The groundworker surveys the connection with a marXact GNSS receiver, for example the UNI-GR2 on the pole: the connection point, the run of the pipe and the rodding eye, each with a centimetre-accurate RTK position. The measurements sync to UNI-Cloud and are available in Riox straight away through the realtime API, alongside the photos and material details already recorded there.

The as-built record is created during the work instead of afterwards at the office, from memory and a handful of photos.

A concrete example

Say a contractor installs 60 house connections on a new housing development. At every connection the groundworker surveys the layout before the trench is closed, and adds material and diameter in the app. By the end of the week the complete as-built record sits validated in the local authority’s portal. Five years later a colleague goes looking for a blocked connection: the stored position is good enough to put the spade straight next to it.

The as-built obligation becomes a by-product of the normal work instead of an afterthought.
