Every surveyor knows the pose: pole on the point, bubble in the middle, hold still, measure. It works, until the point sits somewhere you cannot hold a pole vertical. Tilt compensation on the UNI-GR2 corrects for the angle of the pole, up to 45 degrees, so you can put the tip on the point and measure without levelling.
How tilt compensation works
Die UNI-GR2 has a built-in tilt sensor with a 9 degrees of freedom IMU. While you measure, the sensor dynamically compensates for the tilt of the pole, combining the inertial data with the RTK position. The result is a position for the pole tip without the levelling ritual, for any lean up to 45 degrees.
You need a UNI-GR2 with an RTK fix and the correct pole height in your project settings. Calibration takes a moment and the app walks you through it: start the tilt function, hold the pole still for the static phase, then move it back and forth in straight lines with the tip on the same spot until the status reads OK. From then on you measure as usual, just faster.
Where it earns its keep
Tilt compensation is for the points a vertical pole cannot reach:
- A trench you cannot or should not enter: put the tip on the pipe from the edge.
- Under a roof, carport or tree canopy: the receiver stays out in the open while the tip reaches the point.
- Along building edges and facades, where a levelled pole would have to lean into the wall.
Those are exactly the points that used to end up as estimates or as a second visit with different equipment.
A concrete example
A groundworker documents a house connection in an open trench. The safe way used to be climbing in or measuring the edge and estimating the rest. With tilt compensation, the tip goes onto the pipe saddle from above and the receiver hangs at an angle over the trench. A tilted shot is not the same as a levelled one. You give up a little accuracy, and more of it the further you lean the pole, so keep the lean as small as the point allows. For a connection like this one, where the alternative was an estimate or a return visit with other equipment, that trade is worth making. The trench closes and the pipe is documented where it actually lies.
Erste Schritte
Tilt compensation is a hardware capability of the UNI-GR2 and works with the UNI-Collect app. Receiver, app, cloud environment and RTK corrections come as one package: das UNI-Collect-Umfragepaket.
