TerraIndex is software for digitising soil investigation. The company calls itself the market leader in automating soil investigation and says it has been working for more than 250 consultancy and engineering firms for over 29 years. Environmental consultancies, field survey firms and geotechnical companies use it to record borehole descriptions, sampling, groundwater sampling and sediment investigation, digitally in the field, online or offline, synced with the office. That saves retyping paper borehole logs afterwards.
Every borehole and every monitoring well needs a location. And that is exactly where the link with marXact comes in: you use the marXact receiver over Bluetooth as the position source in TerraIndex, so the position of every measurement point is recorded to the centimetre instead of estimated.
How the TerraIndex GPS integration works
The field worker connects the UNI-GR2 GNSS-Empfänger to the field device over Bluetooth and selects it as the position source in TerraIndex. At every borehole the app takes over the centimetre-accurate RTK position from the receiver. The borehole description, the samples and the exact location are tied together from the first moment.
That pays off later. A resampling round or a follow-up investigation starts with finding the old points again, and with RTK positions you simply stand in the same place.
A concrete example
Say a field survey firm carries out an exploratory soil investigation on a former industrial site. Every borehole goes into TerraIndex with its description and samples, with the UNI-GR2 position attached. A year later a follow-up investigation is needed: the new boreholes are placed right next to the old ones, and the report shows both series without any puzzling over where borehole 12 stood at the time.
