What is GLONASS?

GLONASS was developed by the Soviet Union as an experimental military communications system in 1970 and is now operated by the Russian government. The first satellite was launched in 1982 and the system was declared fully operational in 1993. The GLONASS constellation consists of 24 satellites and provides global coverage.
