Feature Friday – 4G and the new NFC

  • 5 min read
Feature Friday – February 2022

We have made it our mission to make digital surveying available to every field worker out there. To create the best possible personalized surveying experience for all of them, with handy tips and tricks, connections with other apps or software, and new feature releases frequently.

We combine these releases and updates and how they’ll improve your digital surveying experience in monthly updates: these Feature Friday blogs. In this edition, we tell you about a number of new functions that have gone live recently and improvements that we have made to the UNI-Solutions. We tell you more about the 4G hardware upgrade that UNI users benefit from, the change in the possibilities of the NFC, and coloured options when switching your UNI-GR1 on and off.

4G hardware upgrade

We have already talked about the transition from 3G to 4G in previous Feature Friday blogs, it’s the new standard for internet speed and access. UNI users can make this transition free of charge by ordering a special 4G hardware upgrade from us. They have received a mailing for this, which explains how to order the free upgrade step-by-step. Shipping of the upgrades will start in a few weeks.

We often say that we think it is important to create an optimal digital surveying experience and responding to (such kind of) changes contributes to that. This way, you continue to get the most out of your UNI-Solutions.

New NFC possibilities

We have slightly adjusted and expanded the possibilities of the NFC tag. To ensure that you can survey throughout the day, we have developed an energy-saving function. The NFC tag no longer works by default. From now on, you first go to the discovery mode by pressing the ‘on’ button for 15 seconds, then the LED ring turns blue, and the tag is linked to your UNI-GR1. By adding the NFC tag to the discovery mode, there is one less standard function to load. As a result, your battery is used less and you have extra energy left for digital surveying.

Do you want to continue working with the NFC tag? Making the connection remains as easy as you are used to from us!

Boot animation

This recently launched feature makes it possible to see even better if the UNI turns on. After pressing the power button, the LED ring will ‘spin’, will slowly turn green in the start-up phase, and end when the UNI has completely started up. How convenient is that?

Energy saving modus

Thanks to one of our newest features, you can save even more battery power! If your battery is 20% or less, the LEDs will automatically dim and at 10% or less even more. This saves your battery and gives an extra indication that you can the charger ready. This feature is integrated in the next UNI-Connect update, which will be released in a few weeks.

STM update

This update is more technical and is on its way. You will see when updates will be installed soon, we have done a lot of work on improving the internal coprocessor for this. When you turn off your UNI-GR1 and the LED ring starts to ‘spin’ white, you know that the most recent update is being installed. You don’t have to be shocked when you see the ring ‘jump’, it’s just a sign of your new measuring possibilities!

In time, machine control

Okay, okay. This is more of a long term plan, but a lot of fun anyhow! We are researching the possibilities for machine control with a partner. In this case, a UNI is mounted on (for example) an excavator and data can also be measured in this way. This is a long process, but too good not to share – especially because this question has come from the work field.

What steps do you need to take?

Not a lot, if we are completely honest with you. All updates are done automatically and while you are out surveying in the field or preparing tasks in the office. You might need to turn your UNI-GR1 off and on again, but only when the update stops unexpectedly. After turning it on again, you are good to go.

More releases coming up

We have more releases and possibilities coming up, including the brand-new UNI-Collect survey app, expanding the UNI-Cloud project measuring and editing possibilities, the ability to draw points and lines in the UNI-Cloud, and additional coordinate systems. More on this in future Feature Friday blogs!
